Setup
Hold the handle with one hand and lean your torso forward just slightly. Keep your elbow tucked beside your torso, and lightly brace yourself with the opposite hand so you do not sway.
Start phase
Press the handle down with one triceps, straightening your elbow. Keep your core engaged so your torso does not rotate with the movement.
End phase
Slowly raise the handle and bend your elbow. Fold at the same spot without letting your elbow drift away from your torso.
Target muscles
Focus on feeling the triceps on that side contract independently. The elbow often flares or the torso rotates on the weaker side, so use a mirror to check your position.
Common mistakes
Twisting your torso or shrugging makes your lower back and shoulder do the work before your triceps. Prioritize a fixed elbow and a square upper body over heavier weight.
Breathing
Exhale as you press down and inhale as you return. Even when working one side at a time, steady breathing keeps the movement stable.
Coach tip
Start with your weaker side, then match the stronger side for reps and tempo. Pause for 1 second at full extension to feel the unilateral triceps contraction more clearly.
