Setup
Grip the bar with your palms facing up and lean your torso slightly forward. Keep your elbows tucked by your sides and your wrists straight.
Start phase
Keep your elbows fixed and press the bar down. Drive it down with your triceps while maintaining the palms-up grip.
End phase
Bend your elbows as you slowly let the bar rise. Keep your torso still and return without letting your shoulders lift.
Target muscles
You should feel the inner triceps lengthen and then contract. If your wrists take over, your forearms will fatigue first, so press with the sensation of folding the area below your elbows.
Common mistakes
Over-bending your wrists or shrugging makes your forearms and neck fatigue first. Prioritize a stable grip and fixed elbows over heavier weight.
Breathing
Exhale as you press down and inhale as you return. It’s important to keep breathing throughout, even with the short range of motion.
Coach tip
Keeping tension as the bar rises creates a stronger inner-triceps tension. Alternating this with a standard pushdown is a good way to develop the inner and outer triceps evenly.
