Setup
Grasp one end of the rope and face forward with your torso upright. Keep the working-side elbow against your body and brace your opposite-side core so you do not rotate.
Start phase
Press your side of the rope down and straighten your elbow. Drive all the way through with your triceps without twisting your torso.
End phase
Slowly raise the rope and bend your elbow. Return along the same path under continuous tension.
Target muscles
You can immediately feel the difference between sides as each triceps contracts independently. The elbow often flares or the shoulder rises on the weaker side, so check yourself in a mirror.
Common mistakes
Rotating your torso or pulling your shoulder up makes your lower back and traps work before your triceps. Prioritize a stable upper body and fixed elbow over heavier weight.
Breathing
Exhale as you press and inhale as you return. Keeping your breathing steady stabilizes the movement even when working one side at a time.
Coach tip
Start with your weaker side, then match the stronger side for reps and tempo. Pause for 1 second at full extension to confirm the unilateral triceps contraction more precisely.
