Learn how to perform Deep Push Up, a Chest exercise, with setup, breathing and common mistakes.

Deep Push Up · Preview

STEP 1

Setup

Place your hands on push-up bars or boxes so you can lower deeper than in a standard push-up. Keep your body straight and first find a width that feels comfortable for your wrists and shoulders.

STEP 2

Start phase

Bend your elbows and slowly lower until your chest moves below your hands. Even with the deeper range, control your speed so your torso does not collapse first.

STEP 3

End phase

Push firmly through the support and come back up. Think of lifting your body with your chest, without momentum, after the deep stretch.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Pull your elbows in so your chest lengthens and then draws inward. Use the deeper range only if you can control both the lowering and lifting phases.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

If you rush to reach depth, the front of your shoulders can become uncomfortable. Prioritize a stable descent and a straight torso over extra depth.

STEP 6

Breathing

Inhale as you lower and exhale as you push up. Exhaling as you push helps you brace your core so your upper body stays steady at depth.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Start with low push-up bars and find a depth that feels comfortable for your shoulders. Pause briefly at the bottom, then rise to use the chest stretch without momentum.
