Wide Push Up · Preview
Setup
Place your hands wider than your shoulders and make your body straight. Brace your core and glutes so your body does not sag.
Start phase
Bend your elbows and slowly lower your chest toward the floor. Keep your shoulders from shrugging and lower your body as one unit.
End phase
Push the floor away with your palms and come up. Think about bringing the outside of your chest back toward the center as you push.
Target muscles
Think about pushing the floor away with the outer chest. If you feel only your arms pushing, bring your hands slightly closer and try again.
Common mistakes
Hands that are too wide can make your shoulder joints fatigue before your chest. Use the widest grip that still feels comfortable for your shoulders.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower and exhale as you push up. Exhaling as you push helps you keep tension in your chest.
Coach tip
A wide grip gives your chest a broader stretch. Avoid rushing up from the lowest point so you can make better use of that stretch.
