Setup
Stand tall with a dumbbell in one hand. Place your other hand lightly on your hip, brace your abs, and keep your hips and chest facing forward.
Start phase
Slowly lean your torso toward the dumbbell, lengthening your side. Do not bend forward or backward—lean only to the side so the opposite side stays long.
End phase
Use the strength of your opposite side to bring your torso back upright. Don't come up as if tossing the dumbbell; control the return just as slowly.
Target muscles
Check that one side of your waist lengthens as you lean and the other side tightens as you return. If you feel only your lower back—not your side body—check that you're not bending forward or backward.
Common mistakes
Bending forward or twisting your torso shifts discomfort to your lower back and takes tension off your side body. Even if you shorten the range, keep the movement purely side to side.
Breathing
Inhale as you lean and exhale as you return. As you exhale, brace your side abs and bring your torso upright.
Coach tip
You don't need to lean very deeply. The priority is finding the range where your side body truly lengthens and you feel it work as you return.
