Setup
Set the seat so the handles align with your upper chest. Stay against the backrest and gently set your shoulder blades.
Start phase
Bring the handles together and slightly up and forward. Use the upper chest, with a relaxed bend in the elbows, not the shoulders.
End phase
Open the handles slowly and feel the upper chest lengthen. Reverse before the shoulders round forward.
Target muscles
Draw the insides of your upper arms toward the upper chest. If the shoulders pull, correct the seat height.
Common mistakes
Overextending the arms or setting the seat too low overloads the shoulders. Set the seat before increasing weight.
Breathing
Exhale as the handles meet and inhale as they open. Long, steady breaths preserve upper-chest tension.
Coach tip
Move slowly and pause briefly at the top. Less swinging means more upper-chest tension.
