Setup
Grip the V-bar and first find a position where your wrists can stay naturally straight. Keep your elbows by your sides and lower your shoulders so your triceps are ready to take the load immediately.
Start phase
Press the V-bar down as you extend your elbows. Because the handle is stable, focus on letting your triceps drive the press instead of your wrists.
End phase
Slowly let the V-bar rise and return along the same path. The key is to avoid completely releasing tension as your arms come up.
Target muscles
You should feel the entire triceps tighten firmly as force transfers straight through your arms. The handle is more stable than a rope, making it easier to stay focused on your triceps even with heavier weight.
Common mistakes
The stable handle makes it easy to add too much weight, which brings your shoulders and torso momentum into the movement first. Prioritize fixed elbows and a controlled lowering phase over heavier weight.
Breathing
Exhale as you press down and inhale as you let the bar rise. Repeating at a steady pace matched to your breathing makes the movement more stable.
Coach tip
At full arm extension, don’t bend your wrists further; keep your forearms and the backs of your hands in one straight line. Even through the same range of motion, your wrist angle can make a major difference in triceps contraction.
