STEP 1

Setup

Lean into the shoulder pads and backrest, then place your feet wider than shoulder-width on the platform with your toes turned out. Set your foot position first, then brace your abs to lock in your torso.

STEP 2

Start phase

Bend your hips and knees together as you lower, driving your knees in the direction of your toes. Feel the stretch through your inner thighs while keeping your pelvis from lifting off the pads.

STEP 3

End phase

Drive through your entire foot to press the platform away and stand back up. Don't lock out your knees; finish by staying strong through your quads and glutes.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Make sure your inner thighs and glutes are working together. It's normal to feel more tension in your inner thighs than in a standard hack squat.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

If your knees cave in with the wide stance, stress on your knees increases significantly. Even if you shorten the depth, first make sure your knees track toward your toes.

STEP 6

Breathing

Inhale as you lower and exhale as you drive up. Maintaining your breathing helps you keep tension in your torso at the bottom.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Set your foot spacing and toe angle during the first set, then keep the same position on every rep. Alternating this with a standard hack squat can help develop your quads and inner thighs more evenly.
